2. High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS / London Weighting)
Recognising higher living and housing costs across London, NHS staff working in designated areas receive statutory High Cost Area Supplements. These supplements are calculated as a percentage of basic salary, bounded by statutory annual minimum floors and maximum caps:
- Inner London: 20% of basic salary (statutory minimum £5,794; maximum £8,746).
- Outer London: 15% of basic salary (statutory minimum £4,870; maximum £6,137).
- London Fringe: 5% of basic salary (statutory minimum £1,346; maximum £2,270).
All HCAS allowances are treated as 100% pensionable earnings and are included when determining your NHS Pension Scheme contribution tier.
3. NHS Pension Scheme Member Contribution Tiers (2026/27)
The NHS Pension Scheme is a defined benefit Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) scheme. Member contributions are deducted on a tiered scale based on annual pensionable pay:
| Tier | Pensionable Pay Band | Gross Contribution Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Up to £13,259.00 | 5.2% |
| Tier 2 | £13,260.00 to £28,854.00 | 6.5% |
| Tier 3 | £28,855.00 to £35,155.00 | 8.3% |
| Tier 4 | £35,156.00 to £52,778.00 | 9.8% |
| Tier 5 | £52,779.00 to £67,668.00 | 10.7% |
| Tier 6 | £67,669.00 and above | 12.5% |
Under Section 193 of the Finance Act 2004, contributions are administered as a net-pay arrangement. You receive full income tax relief at source, while National Insurance and Student Loan repayments are calculated on gross pay before pension deductions.
