PAYE calculator UK (2026/27)

Use the calculator for an annual employment-income estimate. It applies the selected tax code, employee NI, one student-loan plan and a salary-sacrifice pension percentage. Monthly figures are annual equivalents, not a payroll reconstruction.

Annual estimate versus cumulative payroll

PAYE usually takes account of earnings, allowances and tax already paid during the tax year. The calculator does not ask for your pay-to-date or tax-to-date, so it cannot reproduce that cumulative payroll process.

A W1, M1 or X marker means non-cumulative treatment. Use the emergency-tax comparison for a single-period illustration, then check your payslip and HMRC record.

What your tax code can change

A standard 1257L code represents a £12,570 annual allowance before any income-based taper in this estimate. BR applies basic-rate tax to all pay from that employment; D0 and D1 apply different flat rates. A 0T code has no allowance but still uses normal bands.

K codes add an amount to taxable pay. Actual payroll has a pay-period collection limit. Scottish S-prefixed codes need the separate Scottish calculator and Scottish bands.

If the deduction appears wrong

Check the employment, estimated income and benefits recorded in your HMRC account. Ask your payroll team what code and basis were applied.

An updated code can change later deductions, but this tool does not promise a repayment amount, processing time or a refund on your next payslip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers based on official HMRC rules and statutory guidance.

No. Refunds depend on the actual record of earnings and tax paid, not just a comparison between two annual estimates.

Annual employment estimate

Use the stated tax code and gross pay to compare employment deductions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Monthly, weekly and daily figures divide an annual result; they do not reconstruct cumulative payroll.

The main pension input models salary sacrifice. Irregular pay, benefits in kind, multiple employments and a different pension method can change a real payslip. Use the Scottish tool for Scottish employment income.

Reproducible worked example

At £35,000, standard annual Income Tax is £4,486.00 and employee NI is £1,794.40. Dividing by twelve gives a planning figure, not a cumulative payslip calculation.

2026/27, England/Wales/Northern Ireland, standard 1257L, no other income, no student loan or pension unless explicitly selected in the example. Figures use the same annual engine as the calculator.
