What Is an HMRC P800 Tax Calculation & How Does It Work?
At the conclusion of each UK tax year on 5 April, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) conducts an automated annual reconciliation of every PAYE employee's pay and deductions. Employers submit payroll figures to HMRC in real time under the Real Time Information (RTI) system.
Between June and November, HMRC compares the total Income Tax your employers deducted against your true statutory liability. If the figures do not match, HMRC issues a formal calculation known as a P800 Tax Calculation:
You Are Owed a Tax Refund (Overpaid)
HMRC confirms that you paid more Income Tax than required. You can claim an immediate repayment online via your Personal Tax Account directly to your bank account within 5 working days, or HMRC will post a cheque.
You Owe Tax (Underpaid)
If you underpaid (for example, due to company car benefits or multiple jobs exceeding basic rate limits), HMRC will typically adjust your tax code for the following tax year to collect the shortfall in small monthly increments.
Top Reasons Taxpayers Overpay PAYE Income Tax in the UK
Most PAYE employees assume their tax deductions are automatically correct. In practice, hundreds of thousands of workers overpay tax every year due to common administrative and lifestyle triggers:
1. Emergency Tax Codes (0T, BR, W1/M1)
Starting a new employment without providing a P45 frequently triggers code 0T or BR. Code 0T deducts tax with £0 Personal Allowance, overtaxing a basic-rate worker by up to £2,514.00 per year.
2. Mid-Year Employment Gap / Redundancy
PAYE spreads your £12,570 allowance evenly across 12 months (£1,047.50/mo). If you only worked 6 months and were unemployed or redundant for the remainder, you only received half of your tax-free allowance, creating a substantial refund.
3. Unclaimed Section 367 Uniform Expenses
If you wash, repair, or replace your work uniform or specialist protective clothing at your own expense, you are legally entitled to statutory Flat Rate Expenses under Section 367 ITEPA 2003 (£60 to £140/yr).
4. Marriage Allowance (£252 Rebate)
If your spouse or civil partner earns under £12,570, they can transfer 10% of their Personal Allowance (£1,260) to you under Section 55A ITA 2007, reducing your tax by up to £252 per year. This can be backdated 4 years for up to £1,008.
Warning: Why You Must Never Use Fee-Charging Tax Refund Agencies
Social media feeds and search engines are saturated with advertisements from commercial "tax rebate companies" promising fast payouts. Taxpayers should exercise extreme caution:
The Fee Trap: Commercial refund firms routinely deduct 30% to 48% plus VAT from your statutory refund, plus administration fees of £50 to £100 per tax year claimed. On a £1,500 refund, you could lose over £700 to fees.
Deeds of Assignment: Many firms require you to sign a legal assignment giving them the legal authority to receive all future tax repayments from HMRC on your behalf, even for years they did not assist you with.
HMRC Claim Is 100% Free: HMRC does not charge any fee to claim your rebate. The online form on GOV.UK takes under 10 minutes to complete, requires zero paperwork, and pays 100% of your money directly into your personal bank account.
