Prepare a tax-relief letter using your actual records

This tool helps organise a draft for you to check. It does not issue a P800 calculation, submit a claim to HMRC, establish eligibility or guarantee a repayment. Use HMRC’s appropriate online or Self Assessment route where required.

A draft query, not a submitted claim. This tool does not produce an HMRC P800 or replace an official P87, Marriage Allowance application or Self Assessment return. Check the correct official route, eligibility, time limit and contact details before sending. No refund or processing time is guaranteed.

Describe your tax query

Draft a separate explanation using the actual records for each year. The current tax year may require a tax-code or in-year query rather than a year-end refund. Selecting an earlier year does not confirm that a particular claim is in time.

You can leave identifying information blank and add it later using the official secure route. No bank details are needed to prepare this draft.

Only select documents you are actually supplying

Review your draft

Replace the bracketed prompts, confirm every statement and choose the HMRC process for your circumstances. The text includes no invented personal details, certification or legal entitlement.

Drafting runs in your browser. This tool does not send a letter or submit information to HMRC. A copied or downloaded draft can contain the identifying details you entered; store and send it carefully.

Check the official route first

Start with the official claim route

A P800 is a tax calculation issued by HMRC; it is not a form generated by this website. If HMRC has already sent a calculation, follow the instructions on that notice and check your Personal Tax Account.

Employment-expense claims may use HMRC’s online service, a supported paper route or Self Assessment depending on the circumstances and total qualifying expenses. A letter does not bypass the correct route, evidence requirements or a filing obligation.

Write one clear tax-year enquiry

Identify the tax year, the employment and the reason for the enquiry. Use actual amounts from records rather than an assumed maximum relief or a default four-year total. Different years can have different rates and deadlines.

For mileage, distinguish qualifying business journeys from ordinary commuting and subtract employer reimbursement. Use 55p/25p for qualifying employee car/van mileage in 2026/27, and the appropriate historical rates for an earlier year. A separate unpaid passenger allowance is not deductible Mileage Allowance Relief.

For expenses such as professional subscriptions, uniform care or working from home, check the relevant conditions before describing a payment as allowable. Do not claim a cost already reimbursed by an employer. A tax deduction is not always a pound-for-pound repayment.

Include only evidence that actually exists

Review the draft before sending it. Replace placeholders with your true details and remove any statement that is not supported by your records. A list of possible enclosures is not a declaration that those documents exist or have been certified.

Do not include tax-account passwords, sign-in codes or unnecessary sensitive information. Use HMRC’s verified contact or submission details, not an address from an unsolicited message. Keep a copy of what you actually submit and its supporting evidence.

A draft is not a decision or a submission service

The letter is generated in your browser. You decide what to include and send; this site does not connect to your tax account or act as your agent. Copying or downloading the draft does not lodge a claim.

HMRC decides the treatment using the facts and applicable rules. There is no promised scanning, processing or repayment time from this tool. Check HMRC’s current guidance and contact options if you need to follow up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers based on official HMRC rules and statutory guidance.

No. It produces a draft enquiry letter for you to review. HMRC issues P800 calculations; this website cannot issue one or submit a claim automatically.

Relief is not reimbursement

Only qualifying unreimbursed employment expenses are potentially deductible. An eligible expense normally reduces taxable income; it does not produce a refund equal to the entire expense.

Use HMRC evidence and claim rules. This tool does not file a P87, validate a uniform category, determine eligibility or guarantee a repayment. The general employment-expense test is in ITEPA 2003 section 336; do not rely on an unrelated section number.
