Double-cab pickup tax: separate BIK, VAT and road tax

A pickup’s payload is not a universal tax classification. Use this comparison to understand the cost of a stated treatment, then confirm the facts before treating a vehicle as a van or reclaiming VAT.

VAT payload and employment BIK are different tests. From 6 April 2025, most double-cab pickups are expected to be cars for employment BIK based on their construction as a whole. A payload of at least one tonne does not automatically give van BIK, full VAT recovery, a VED class or capital allowances.

1. VAT payload indicator

Use the manufacturer/dealer definition and any applicable hardtop convention. These inputs are illustrative and not a certification of a vehicle model.

Illustrative effective payload

1,050 kg

Meets the one-tonne payload limb of the VAT motor-car definition. This does not establish VAT recovery. Check VAT registration, the invoice, business use, exclusions and any private-use accounting.

2. Full-year BIK illustration: 2026/27

Select van treatment only if the vehicle construction or a valid existing transitional arrangement supports it. This selector does not determine eligibility and does not change the VAT result.

Confirm the percentage from the applicable CO₂, fuel-type and registration rules; the initial 37% is an example, not a model-specific assessment.

Estimated employee tax at the selected rate

Full-year illustration, no employee contribution or availability reduction. Car fuel uses the £29,200 multiplier; a confirmed van uses £4,170 vehicle and £798 fuel benefit where applicable. Crossing tax bands, Personal Allowance taper and other income can change the actual tax.

Check any transitional arrangement separately

HMRC allows previous treatment for qualifying vehicles purchased, leased or ordered by an employer before 6 April 2025 until the earlier of disposal, lease expiry or 5 April 2029. Replacing the vehicle or entering a new lease can end that treatment. It is not a general exemption for all pickups with a one-tonne payload.

VAT, VED and capital allowances have separate rules and effective dates. This calculator does not calculate VAT recovery or Annual Investment Allowance and does not promise a Corporation Tax saving.

Employment Benefit-in-Kind changed from 6 April 2025

For Income Tax purposes, HMRC assesses double-cab pickups under the primary-suitability test from 6 April 2025. Most double-cab pickups are treated as cars rather than vans. A payload above one tonne does not automatically preserve the flat van-benefit treatment.

A limited transition applies to some vehicles purchased, leased or ordered before 6 April 2025. Where the conditions are met, protection ends at the earliest of disposal, lease expiry or 5 April 2029. A registration date or informal description alone does not prove that a vehicle qualifies.

A transparent car-versus-van illustration

Assume a £40,000 P11D value and an illustrative 37% company-car percentage. The annual taxable car benefit is £14,800. At a selected 40% Income Tax rate throughout that benefit, the illustrated employee cost is £5,920. The calculator is not certifying that 37% is the correct percentage for a particular pickup.

For comparison only, a full standard 2026/27 taxable van benefit of £4,170 would give £1,668 tax at the same 40% rate. That difference does not establish eligibility for van treatment. Part-year use, employee contributions, exemptions, tax-band crossings and allowance tapering can change the actual bill.

If the full private car-fuel benefit applies, its 2026/27 multiplier is £29,200. At 37%, the fuel benefit is £10,804 before Income Tax; at an illustrative 40%, the tax is £4,321.60. Private-fuel withdrawal and making-good conditions need separate checking.

VAT payload is a different question

The one-tonne convention used for VAT does not make the same pickup a van for employment Income Tax. Accessories such as a hardtop can affect the payload calculation, but a payload illustration is not permission to recover 100% of VAT.

VAT registration, whether VAT was charged on the invoice, business/private use and the actual purchase or leasing arrangement affect recovery. A dealer’s commercial description is not a substitute for the relevant HMRC test.

Capital allowances and VED also need their own classification

Income Tax and Corporation Tax changes for double-cab pickups have their own effective dates and transitional rules. Do not assume that a result in this BIK comparison grants Annual Investment Allowance or a full first-year deduction.

Vehicle Excise Duty depends on DVLA registration and tax class. Check the V5C and the relevant current tax table rather than inferring road tax from a payload or BIK result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers based on official HMRC rules and statutory guidance.

No. The VAT payload convention is separate from current employment-tax classification. HMRC’s primary-suitability test and any valid transitional protection must be considered.

Benefit in kind differs from a cash deduction

Company-car tax uses the applicable list price, emissions category, appropriate percentage and personal tax treatment. A lease payment or employer cost is a different figure.

A salary-sacrifice comparison also depends on employer scheme terms, pension and minimum-wage constraints. Confirm the car specification and benefit rate rather than assuming every vehicle qualifies for an EV rate.
