England, Wales and Northern Ireland; standard Personal Allowance; no pension, student loan, property, savings or dividend income. Class 4 is estimated on trading profit alone. Annual Class 1/Class 4 maximum adjustments, losses and payments on account are not modelled.
Method and assumptions
Income Tax bands and the Personal Allowance apply to the combined income. Employee Class 1 is estimated on employment salary; Class 4 is calculated separately on trading profit. The reserve is the estimated Income Tax increase plus Class 4 attributable to profit, before any special NI maximum adjustment.

Trading allowance and actual expense deductions are alternatives for the same income. Scottish Income Tax, losses, other income, payments on account and Class 1/Class 4 interaction can need a fuller calculation.
