How Marriage Allowance Changes Your HMRC Tax Codes

Partner 1 (Giver): Tax Code 'N'1131N

The transfer reduces the standard allowance from £12,570 to £11,310. If the transferor earns above the reduced allowance, extra Income Tax can offset some or all of the recipient’s saving.

Partner 2 (Receiver): Tax Code 'M'1383M

An eligible recipient can receive a tax reduction of up to £252. The actual reduction cannot exceed their Income Tax liability; it is not a cash payment where no tax is due.

Check both partners’ tax position

The standard transfer is £1,260. A recipient’s tax reduction cannot exceed the tax they owe. A donor earning above the reduced allowance can pay additional tax, so the couple saving may be less than £252 or there may be no benefit.

This calculator assumes ordinary salary income and standard allowances. Scottish rates, other income, special allowances and individual circumstances require separate checks.

Previous years need separate checks

You may be able to claim for up to four previous tax years if you qualified in those years. The displayed previous-year maximum is an illustration, not a repayment calculation based on your current incomes.

Check each partner’s income, tax paid, relationship status and the applicable deadline for each year. A current-year estimate does not establish eligibility for past years.

Apply through HMRC

Marriage Allowance is for married couples and civil partners who meet the conditions. Living together alone does not qualify.

Read HMRC’s current guidance before applying, and check the code changes and deductions on both partners’ records afterwards. The tool does not make the claim or guarantee a repayment date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers based on official HMRC rules and statutory guidance.

No. The recipient’s tax liability and any additional tax for the donor can reduce the couple benefit. This estimate considers both under its standard salary assumptions.

Compare both partners

Marriage Allowance transfers part of one partner allowance; the donor can pay more tax and the recipient credit is limited by their eligible liability.

The maximum advertised saving is not a guaranteed household gain. Check tax rates, marriage/civil-partnership status, each claim year and the claim deadline through HMRC.
