How Weekly PAYE Tax Deductions Work in 2026/27
In the United Kingdom, approximately one-fifth of the workforce—predominantly across construction, hospitality, retail, and manufacturing—is paid on a weekly payroll cycle. Weekly PAYE operates under the Income Tax (Pay As You Earn) Regulations 2003 (SI 2003/2682) and the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003 (ITEPA 2003).
Rather than evaluating your earnings over a full 12-month calendar, HMRC divides all annual statutory tax thresholds into 52 equal weekly slices:
Class 1 National Insurance: Assessed Weekly, Never Cumulatively
A critical distinction in UK payroll is that while Income Tax is cumulative across the tax year, Class 1 employee National Insurance contributions (NICs) are calculated strictly on each individual pay period under the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992 (SSCBA 1992).
- Up to £241.73 per week: 0% National Insurance (earnings between £123/wk and £241.73/wk earn free State Pension credits).
- £241.74 to £966.73 per week: 8% employee National Insurance deduction.
- Above £966.73 per week: Drops to 2% employee National Insurance deduction on the excess.
Shift Worker Advantage: If you work intensive overtime during one week and earn £1,200, you pay 2% on earnings over £967 for that week. If your pay drops to £200 the following week, you pay £0 NI. The government cannot retroactively claw back NI from your previous overtime week.
How to Accurately Convert Weekly Pay to Monthly and Annual
A common budgeting error is multiplying weekly pay by 4 to estimate monthly earnings. A calendar year has 52 weeks (365 days), meaning an average month contains 4.33 weeks(52 weeks ÷ 12 months = 4.333).
Example: £600/wk × 52 = £31,200 gross annual salary.
Example: (£600/wk × 52) ÷ 12 = £2,600 gross monthly pay.
Overtime, Shift Premiums & Variable Weekly Pay
Many weekly-paid workers receive variable pay including time-and-a-half (1.5×) overtime, double-time (2.0×) bank holiday premiums, and night shift enhancement allowances. Under Section 62 of the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003, all overtime premiums are treated as taxable employment remuneration.
When you work extra shifts in a specific week, your employer adds the enhanced pay into that week's RTI Full Payment Submission. If the gross pay pushes you into the weekly Higher Rate threshold (£966.74/wk), the excess is taxed at 40% for that week. However, under cumulative PAYE, if your subsequent weeks have lower earnings, any overpaid tax is rebalanced automatically on later payslips.
