Portsmouth salary after tax: plan around your real costs
Estimate employment take-home pay, then explore what housing, commuting and household bills could leave in your budget. Enter your own costs; the presets are examples, not verified Portsmouth market averages.

Build a budget around your Portsmouth job offer
A Portsmouth workplace on Portsea Island, a role nearer the mainland and a job reached by a ferry connection can need different budgets. Price the route to the actual entrance or work site, including any crossing and onward journey. Compare Portsmouth and neighbouring-area addresses using their own local charges rather than a single assumed city bill.
Build two versions of the budget using the actual Portsmouth housing quote and the complete travel pattern for each offer. Include access to the service, the final workplace connection, parking where relevant and the office days required. Compare what remains after those costs, pension and loan deductions; the headline gross salary alone cannot establish which option leaves more to spend.
Your Portsmouth pay and household budget
Confirm gross pay, your tax code and pension method before changing costs. The selected career and neighbourhood presets are illustrative inputs. Use your actual Council Tax bill, rather than the example charge for a band. For an average monthly budget, divide the annual bill by 12. If planning a particular month instead, enter the actual instalment due in that month, including a payment-free month where applicable.
Portsmouth Salary & Living Cost Calculator
Calculate HMRC take-home pay, Portsmouth City Council tax, naval defence wages, average rent (£750/mo), and monthly discretionary purchasing power across Portsea Island.
Planning examples, not local market data. Salary, housing, travel and household-cost presets are editable illustrations. They are not verified local medians, current rent quotations, official council charges or ticket prices. Replace them with your contract, current bills and travel quote. Public-sector preset pension percentages are examples; check your scheme statement.
Salary sacrifice: reduces the contractual pay used for Income Tax, employee NI and student-loan estimates. The pension percentage here applies to the whole gross salary; relief-at-source and qualifying-earnings pensions need a different calculation. Annualised estimates can differ from a payslip.

2. Portsmouth Housing & Solent Commuting
This compares only the entered recurring costs with estimated take-home pay. Debts, childcare, irregular bills and other spending may be missing. The remainder is not a forecast of savings or a measure of living standards.
Rent accounts for 35.2% of net earnings. This compares your entered rent with estimated net pay; it is not a landlord's affordability assessment.

Worked salary examples, with one consistent set of assumptions
These are separate reference examples, not a prediction of local earnings or a copy of the calculator's current selection. Each uses 1257L, Plan 2, a 5% salary-sacrifice pension and 2026/27 England, Wales and Northern Ireland employment rates. They exclude benefits in kind and other income.
| Gross / year | Income Tax / month | NI / month | Loan / month | Pension / month | Take-home / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| £25,000.00 | £186.33 | £74.53 | £0.00 | £104.17 | £1,718.30 |
| £35,000.00 | £344.67 | £137.87 | £28.99 | £145.83 | £2,259.31 |
| £50,000.00 | £582.17 | £232.87 | £135.86 | £208.33 | £3,007.44 |
| £75,000.00 | £1,327.67 | £286.30 | £313.99 | £312.50 | £4,009.55 |
| £100,000.00 | £2,119.33 | £325.88 | £492.11 | £416.67 | £4,979.34 |
Monthly amounts are annual estimates divided by 12. Individual rounded columns can differ by a penny from a rounded total; actual payroll uses the applicable pay-period rules.
The pension method changes the result
For the separate £35,000.00 example with the same 5% contribution and Plan 2, estimated monthly take-home is £2,259.31 with salary sacrifice or £2,234.52 under a net-pay arrangement. Both use a £1,750.00 annual pension contribution. Net-pay pension contributions do not normally reduce the earnings used for employee NI or student-loan repayments.
A contribution illustration does not establish that salary sacrifice is available to you. Check your employer's scheme, pensionable pay and National Minimum Wage restrictions before changing a contribution. Relief-at-source pensions need a different calculation.
Before deciding that a salary covers your costs
- Use an address-specific housing quote. Include deposits, moving costs, service charges and the bills excluded from the rent. A room, flat and family home are different scenarios; a preset is not proof that a property is currently available at that price.
- Price the journey you will actually make. Check the origin, destination, onward travel, parking and days in the workplace using National Rail. Compare the tickets offered for that pattern rather than assuming an annual season ticket is always best.
- Use the right local bill. Ask Portsmouth City Council about the charge for your address and any discount you genuinely qualify for. The correct authority depends on the property, not simply the nearest town or your employer's location.
- Allow for costs outside the main inputs. Check childcare, debts, insurance, subscriptions, annual travel and saving for irregular bills. Money left after rent and a commute is not automatically spare spending money.
Sources, scope and how to check a local figure
The sources below explain payroll rules or let you check your own costs. They do not substantiate the illustrative rent, salary or fare presets as official local statistics. For earnings comparisons, record the ONS dataset and observation period, geographic boundary and residence/workplace basis; for costs, keep the dated quote or bill you actually use.
